Rheem heat pump repair in Santa Clarita typically runs $150 to $650 installed, depending on the failed part. We carry Rheem-compatible parts on our trucks and can usually diagnose and complete the swap same day. Most Santa Clarita homeowners discover a problem the same way: the system still runs but the air coming out of the vents feels lukewarm, or the outdoor unit cycles on and off every few minutes without moving heat.

The most common call we get this time of year is a dead run capacitor. It’s a $20 part that fails in Santa Clarita heat every summer because the capacitor sits inside a metal cabinet that bakes in direct sun. Heat kills capacitors faster than anything else. You’ll hear a click or a hum from the outdoor unit, but the fan and compressor won’t start. The good news is we can usually have that fixed within an hour of rolling up the driveway. Price is on paper before the first bolt turns. That’s how we work.
Dalton Heating & Air Santa Clarita is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Rheem, but Rheem is one of nine brands our technicians are factory-trained to service.
Which Rheem Models This Applies To
Most Rheem heat pumps fall into three product lines: the Classic Series (single-stage, budget-friendly, R-410A), the Prestige Series (two-stage compressors, better humidity control), and the Endeavor Line (Rheem’s newer low-GWP refrigerant platform with inverter technology). The Endeavor units use R-454B refrigerant, which operates at a different pressure than older R-410A systems. That means a part from a Prestige unit will not always cross over to an Endeavor, even if the physical connector size looks the same.
The fastest way to identify your Rheem model is a look at the data plate on the side of the outdoor unit. You’ll see a model number that starts with “RP” for Rheem heat pumps (example: RP1436AJ1NA). The “14” in that string usually corresponds to a 14 SEER unit, and the “36” tells you it’s a three-ton system. That number matters because the right capacitor, contactor, defrost control board, or reversing valve depends on getting the exact match.
On OEM versus aftermarket parts for Rheem specifically: Rheem uses proprietary control boards on many of its newer units. An aftermarket board can trigger false error codes or skip defrost cycles. For the cost difference on a control board, we recommend OEM on anything electronic. For mechanical parts like contactors or capacitors, a quality aftermarket part from a manufacturer we trust works fine and often saves you $30 to $60.

Signs Your Rheem Heat Pump Service Is Failing
- Outdoor unit hums but won’t start. The capacitor has failed and the compressor can’t get the voltage kick it needs to spin up. Letting it sit in this state will burn up the compressor over a matter of days, not weeks.
- Air coming from vents is cooler than room temperature but not cold. The system is running in cooling mode but the condenser fan is not pulling heat out of the refrigerant. This is usually a failed condenser fan motor or a clogged outdoor coil.
- The outdoor unit turns into a block of ice on a mild night. That’s the defrost control board failing, and it happens more often on Rheem units than most people expect. The board controls a reversing valve that briefly sends heat to the outdoor coil to melt frost. If it doesn’t, ice builds until the unit shuts itself down.
- Short cycling every two to three minutes. The system starts, runs briefly, then shuts off before reaching temperature. Low refrigerant charge, a failing thermistor, or a bad high-pressure switch are the usual culprits on Rheem equipment.
- The system blows warm air in heat mode but blows cold air in cooling mode. The reversing valve itself has failed or is not getting the 24-volt signal it needs to shift. In Santa Clarita, where mild winters mean heat pumps run in heating mode only a few months of the year, a stuck reversing valve often goes unnoticed until the first cold snap.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we charge in Santa Clarita for common Rheem heat pump repairs:
- Run capacitor replacement: $150 – $280 installed. We carry 370V and 440V dual-run capacitors in every common microfarad rating on the truck.
- Contactor replacement: $165 – $320 installed. This is the switch that routes 240 volts to the compressor and fan when the thermostat calls for cooling.
- Condenser fan motor (single speed): $350 – $550 installed. Includes the motor, the fan blade hub, and a new run capacitor for the fan circuit if it needs one.
- Defrost control board: $280 – $470 installed. OEM Rheem board and includes reprogramming and a full defrost cycle test before we leave.
- Reversing valve replacement: $550 – $650 installed. This requires recovering the refrigerant, brazing in the new valve, pressure testing, vacuum, and recharge. It’s a half-day job and the labor drives the price.
Every price is in writing before we start, and every repair carries our written one-year guarantee. If the same part fails again inside that year, we return at no charge. That’s The Garrison Standard, and we’ve been held to it since 2003. The parts we install for Rheem units include a manufacturer’s warranty as well, so you’re covered two ways.
DIY or Call Us?
Every heat pump has high voltage running to the outdoor unit: 240 volts that can and does kill people who open the panel without understanding what they’re touching. If you are not comfortable working around live electrical equipment, do not open that panel. A failed capacitor can also hold a charge even after the power is off, which is the kind of thing that surprises DIYers every year.
What you can safely check yourself: Is the breaker for the outdoor unit tripped? Is the thermostat calling for the right mode? Is there two feet of clear space around the outdoor unit? Is the filter in the air handler clean? If all of that checks out and the system still isn’t cooling, the next step is a service call. We’ll diagnose the exact failed part, write the number on paper, and fix it with the part we already carry on the truck most days. Call (661) 621-3712 and we’ll get a technician to your Santa Clarita home with the right test equipment and stocked parts.
FAQs
Run capacitors fail every 3 to 7 years in Santa Clarita’s summer heat, far more often than the manufacturer’s 10-year estimate for milder climates. Contactors typically last 8 to 12 years in this region. Control boards and reversing valves on a properly maintained Rheem system should last 12 to 18 years before they need replacement. The Santa Clarita-specific factor is fine dust from the foothills plus triple-digit summer afternoons, both of which shorten part life compared with coastal HVAC systems.
Almost never. Capacitors, contactors, thermistors, and control boards are sealed components. When they fail, they’re done. The only parts we can sometimes repair are we wiring harnesses or we motor that needs a new bearing, but even then we replacement is we cheaper long-term fix. On Rheem systems, we replace the failed component and test the entire circuit so you’re not paying for the same diagnosis twice.
Most single-part swaps, including we run capacitor, contactor, or defrost control board, take 45 to 90 minutes from when we arrive at your Santa Clarita home. Reversing valve replacement is the exception: it takes 4 to 5 hours because the refrigerant has to be recovered and then recharged. We’ll tell you the time commitment on the phone before you book, and we arrive inside the window we give you.
We carry the most commonly failed Rheem parts in our service vehicles: dual-run capacitors in all standard microfarad ratings, single-pole and double-pole contactors, condenser fan motors, defrost control boards for the Classic and Prestige Series, and thermistors. For less common parts or Endeavor-specific components, we order OEM from Rheem’s distribution network and have them within one to two business days. We also stock parts for three other brands we service regularly: Carrier, Trane, and Lennox.
